Artist's Comments

One of four wall hangings based off my Lady of New Mexico tribal. I'll be making a limited number per year of various sizes and finishes.

Rough steel, with amber on copper wire. Approximately 17" tall, uncoated, so the steel will weather, will add a coat of shellac if requested. Apologies for the bad coloring/lighting, the photo doesn't do it justice. I'm having issues with lighting and space to take shots of my work in.

You can order one like this for yourself at my store: [link]

Almost any tribal in my gallery is available to be turned into a freestanding sculpture or wall hanging, if you are curious about pricing for one, let me know- because money is so tight, I will require half the cost up front to pay for supplies and equipment.

Very cool. Looks fun to make, but very time consuming. How'd you make all those cuts?

Actually, not time-consuming thanks to modern machinery. There's a local welder who has a computerized plasma cutter- steel is very hard to make such intricate cuts on with any of the more traditional cutting torches- and if I'd spent that much time on them, there's no way I'd be able to ask just $350 or so for them individually. So I have the welder cut the designs on his equipment (since no way does someone let someone else play with a machine that expensive) and he also helps me finish them up by adding the hangers, since I have no equipment for even spot welding.

Eventually, I hope to do the spot welding on my own, but right now can't afford to set up for that. Once he's helped me get them set up, I finish them up. Each one is fairly individual even though they're cut along the same pattern in terms of look and feel, without taking me days to do every single one (unless I put a really complex finish on one).

Computerized plasma cutter. Fancy. I've used a regular old, non-computerized plasma cutter, and it would be quite difficult with one o' thems.... especially for me :P

I really wouldn't want to try it either.. my hand-eye coordination's not really that good even without the bright sparks distracting me. It'd have to be something a LOT simpler than this in design for me to be able to hand-cut it I think.
